Tips on How To Make A Green Smoothie

We had a great time at the support group meeting last night!    We learned so much from each other!

If you were unable to attend the meeting, click on the link "Adding More Color to Meals" on the right sidebar for the handout with ideas on how to add more color to meals using fruit and veggies.   It also contains information on serving sizes of fruits and veggies.

Also, Mrs. Leafy Greens tantalized our tastebuds with three different green smoothies using various combinations of oranges, dino kale, spinach, frozen pineapple, frozen mangoes, bananas, frozen blueberries, and carrot juice.

Following are some useful tips she gave on making a green smoothie:

1.  Select leafy greens:   one heaping handful of spinach or combine with other leafy greens.   A combination of baby spinach and dino (lacinato) kale works best.

2.     Select two to three fresh fruits, de-pitted and de-seeded:
bananas, strawberries, blueberries, mangos, apples, papaya, kiwi, apples, pears, peaches, blackberries, pineapple, oranges, plums, watermelon, raspberries, grapefruit, nectarines, mandarins, Clementine’s, tangerines, passion fruit, figs, guava, grapes

3.     Select one to two cups of the following liquids, if desired, to serve one or two people:
Juice (fresh with no added sugars)
Water
Coconut water
Ice (optional)

4.     Select natural sweeteners like dates, raisins, or prunes, if desired.

Blend all ingredients until well-blended and creamy.

Other Tips:

*Freezing your fruit helps to keep them longer, and creates a rich, thick smoothie texture. Remember when freezing bananas to peel them first!

*Freezing juice like carrot juice in an ice tray also helps keep the smoothie tasting rich with flavor!

*For those seeking a little more protein, add chia or flax seeds.

I really enjoyed last night's meeting. The smoothies were delicious. Mrs. Leafy Greens has a way of making food prep seem fun! She and others gave some very useful tips. Cutchin Girl's recipes sound wonderful. I can't wait to try them.
I made a green smoothie in a Vita-Mix that the kids absolutely loved. They called it a Raspberry Delight Green Smoothie:
2 whole oranges, peeled but keep pithe
bag of frozen mangoes
1 whole bunch of green chard (use less if not use to green smoothies!)
a handful of frozen rasperries

Blend, SMELL, and enjoy!

Just realized I goofed on the spelling of "orange pith!" No "e" at the end of pith!

Also, The Frugal Health Advocate shared with me last night that she can get organics up to 60% off retail. Her e-mail address is: frugalhealthadvocate@gmail.com.

It was great! I did my first day of green smoothies with a fruit snack and salad for dinner. They are very good and a great way for us to get more fruits and vegetables. Thank you.

Susan - have you tried making more green smoothies since the first day? I agree that they are a good and fun way to get in a lot of servings of fruits and veggies along with eating salads.
